You’re not quite sure what to expect when you visit Zebra Slot Canyon. The walls start out low and slowly get taller and narrower as you move further into the slot canyon. The walls are rough and dull, and you might feel as though they’re closing in on you. The water on the bottom of the slot canyon is also cold, and the experience is unforgettable. After you’ve explored this canyon, you’ll want to visit other similar places in the world.
Nature watching
If you’re looking for a unique experience, try hiking Zebraslot Canyon. The narrow canyon is stamped with pink and white stripes. It is also possible to combine this activity with a visit to nearby Tunnel Slot. It’s worth noting that the route is not well marked, so you’ll want to make notes of landmarks. In order to find your way back to your vehicle, you can park along the road and follow the boot beaten path to Zebra Canyon.
The hiking trail at Zebra Slot Canyon is unmarked, but is generally fairly easy to follow. Once you approach the wash, however, the path gets steep and difficult to follow. You’ll want to use cairns to find your way back to the trailhead. While the trail is not as well marked as some of the other trails in the area, the rewards will be worth it. We were so impressed with the landscape and scenery that we returned several days later.
Hiking through Zebra slot canyon requires approximately 3 to 4 hours of hiking. The canyon is narrow and requires careful navigation, so make sure you give yourself enough time to get a good shot. It’s located along the Hole-in-the-Rock Road in southern Utah. Many other sandstone canyons feed the west bank of the Escalante River. Take note of local rainfall before you start hiking, as it can make hiking through the canyon difficult.
A great way to begin exploring the canyon is to park in Escalante. This town has a BLM Visitor Center where you can get information on the hike and find out about the river levels. You can also access the trailhead via a bumpy dirt washboard. The BLM200 road is also known as Hole in the Rock Road. Even if you drive on this road, it’s safe for any vehicle to pass through.
Hiking
The most exciting part of hiking the Zebraslot Canyon is the aptly named “Zebra” section. In this section, the slot is striped pink and white, making it a photographer’s dream. This section is unmarked, so make notes of landmarks you come across on the way. Its most striking feature is a long, narrow tunnel, filled with water. A short hike down the zebra section will reward you with a view of the colorful, striped rock formations.

From the cattle guard, take a well-worn hikers trail that meansders its way down into Halfway Hollow. This trail is well-cairned and well-defined. From the bottom, the trail cuts left and follows low meanders. Head directly for the Zebra, crossing the Harris Wash on the way. Once you reach the end of the canyon, the trail leads to the first side canyon you’ll see.

One of the most famous features of Zebra Slot Canyon is its unique, narrow shape. The walls of the canyon look like fresh sandpaper. If you walk up the narrow canyon’s walls, you are likely to suffer abrasions. Fortunately, the canyon’s entrance is wide enough to move around comfortably. You’ll be able to take a variety of pictures at Zebra Slot. The canyon walls are striped in spots, making it challenging to set up a tripod and take photos of them. You’ll also want to check out the back side of the canyon to see what the lighting is like. As a photographer, lighting is important, so sand and water play an important role in the quality of your images.
Lighting conditions are ideal for slot canyon photography. Typically, the walls are swirly and the light from the sky reflects warmly off the wall. However, you should make sure that you check current conditions before hiking. While you’ll get plenty of shade along the trail in the spring and fall, there’s little shade in the summer. In addition, flash floods can happen in Zebra Slot Canyon, which makes it dangerous and potentially life-threatening. To avoid these risks, check out the weather forecast ahead of time. If you’re traveling on a rainy day, avoid hiking through the canyon altogether.
While the location may not be well known, the Zebra Slot is still a very unique camping spot. The trailhead is located directly across the street from the parking area. The road to the trailhead is a bumpy 40-mile washboard dirt road. It is typically accessible with a 2-WD vehicle. If you’re bringing a large pack, the road may be too narrow to fit it in. However, the striations on the rock walls resemble zebra stripes.
When camping in Zebra Slot Canyon, you’ll need to bring a tent. It’s a great idea to bring your own tent. You can also rent an air mattress if you’re worried about the cold. Just make sure that you bring enough clothing and water – you don’t want to end up in the middle of nowhere. If you have a tent, you can pitch your tent anywhere in the canyon, but don’t forget to bring an additional sleeping bag and extra clothes.
In the canyon, there are a few things to keep in mind when camping in Zebra Slot Canyon. The first step is to walk through low-lying brush and eventually, you will be on your way to a secluded slot canyon. You’ll need to get over a small rock face in order to get inside the slot. You’ll be amazed at how the pink-striped walls look against the black background.
